From selling junk jewellery on the road side to New York fashion week, Sabyasachi definitely has come a long way. He is truly the king of kitsch. The unique thing about his collection is that he plays with interesting textures and muted colours. From the time he did his graduation show in Kolkatta till now, Sabyasachi has evolved a beautiful style of his own. Whenever you see his collection, it comes out as very earthy, real, elegant and stylish, yet with a rebellious feel about them. In his collection, there were lots of opportunities to mix and match the clothes in the collection. There were a lot of organic fabrics from canvas to brocades, to hand stained satins to vintage, Mughal embroidered fabrics and block prints. Sabyasachi said, “I’d specially made this collection for the Indian market. There are many lehengas, saris, kurtas, Fershi pajamas; the collection had slight Muslim touch to it and was based on the India- Pakistan partition. There were a lot of vintage fabrics. We used a lot of brocades, khadi, cottons, linen, chiffon, silks, lots of embroiders from all over India.” There is usually an Indo-Western fusion to his clothes. The way he throws a jacket over the traditional kurtas, or antique brocade waist coast are teamed with lehengas and blouses. It looks very interesting.
